MEGHALAYA BJP MINORITY CHIEF RESIGNS OVER CITIZENSHIP BILL

Guwahati, January 12, 2019:

Meghalaya’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) minority chief and sitting member of the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC), Sofiur Rahman resigned from his post on Friday. Rahman resigned in opposition against the controversial Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016 that passed in the Lok Sabha.

Rahman submitted his resignation from the post of Minority Morcha president in a letter to the state party chief Shibun Lyndoh.

Speaking to InsideNE, Sofiur Rahman stated that, the “Citizenship Bill should be secular for everyone. Only Hindu or Sikh or Christian to be benefited and that is not acceptable, even Muslim should be allowed to come as this is a secular state. The Citizenship Bill will affect the whole of North-East and not only the minority”.

"Moreover, we will always stand by our public as we are elected leaders at the cost of breaking alliance with BJP," he further added.
