Shillong, March 18, 2019:

Meghalaya CM Conrad Sangma is on the campaign trail as the National People’s Party (NPP) is trying to lay claim to the Tura Constituency. On Sunday, Conrad Sangma, his sister Agatha (who is the party representative from Tura) and their mother Soradini Sangma started the campaign at Adokgre, which has deep historical relevance for the Sangma clan.

Taking about clashes within the Meghalaya Congress camp, Conrad said: “Congress has announced the party ticket, but I am surprised at their choice. Zenith Sangma and Deborah Marak had applied for the ticket, but Mukul didn’t apply. I am surprised that Mukul wants to go to Delhi because Mukul was anticipating that he would get the MDA dislodged. In spite of being the leader of the opposition, he wants to contest and the Congress MLAs are not happy with him contesting about the allotment of party ticket to Mukul.”

Conrad accused the Congress of supporting the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill in its initial phases and claimed that it was defeated due to the NPP’s efforts. “CAB was supported by Congress before when CAB was introduced in the parliament. He gathered support from 11 parties and they requested him to lead the alliance and fight against this Bill and we have stalled it. It was NPP who led from the front and who stalled this Bill. All the people are looking at us. My father was the voice”, he said.

“On April 11, we will have an election; this is the place where we kicked off the elections Chenangre (victory village). I am sure we are winning 100 percent. PA Sangma had served for NE and especially the Garo Hills. In 40 years, he has served in different capacities and brought development to Garo Hills and he is loved by both people of the Northeast and people of the Garo Hills. He could not accomplish all his dreams and we as his children want to accomplish all his dreams for Garo Hills”, said Conrad Sangma
