Meghalaya: Curfew Clamped in Shillong after anti-CAB Protests turn Violent

Shillong, December 12, 2019:

After Assam, Meghalaya too has been rocked by anti-Citizenship Bill protests after the contentious legislation was passed by the Rajya Sabha yesterday.

During a day of mass protests across the Northeast region, agitators took to the streets of Meghalaya capital Shillong to launch to express their resentment for the contentious legislation.

However, the protests turned unruly in several parts of the city, as angry mobs set fire to cars, and involved in other acts of vandalism, which led to the breakdown of the law-and-order situation in the State.

Now, Section 144 of the CrPc has been imposed in An order issued by the office of the DC of the East Khasi Hills district reads, "information is received that there is a serious deterioration of law and order in areas under Sadar Police and and Lumdiengiri Police Station of Shillong city with reports of arson and vandalism causing destruction to property and targeting vehicles in these locations."

Stating that these activities are "likely to continue with every likelihood of causing serious breach of peace and may lead to loss of life and property, from today and the days to follow", the DC of East Khasi Hills has promulgated curfew areas under the two Police Stations.

The areas under the Lumdiengiri Police Station where curfew has been imposed are: Jaiaw, Mawkhar, Umsohsun, Riatsamthiah, Wahingdoh, Mission Mawprem, Lumdiengiri, Lamavilla, Qualapatty, Wahthapbru, Sunny Hills Cantonment, Botcher Road, Mawlanghat (excluding localities beyong Umshyrpi Bridge).

The areas under Sadar Police Station where curfew has been imposed are: Police Bazar, Jail Road. Keating Road, and Polo.
