Meghalaya increases COVID-19 testing capacity to 400 per day

Meghalaya has increased its COVID-19 testing capacity to 400 per day with the installation of a new RT-PCR (Reverse Transcription Polymerase Chain Reaction) machine at the North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (NEIGRIHMS).

Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma wrote on Twitter, “Because of the hard work and commitments of Dr. Anil Phukan, Head of Microbiology at NEIGRIHMS and his team new RT-PCR machine have been set up at NEIGRIHMS and the testing capacity has  now increased to 400 tests per day.” (sic)

Meghalaya has Assam to fight against the COVID-19 by supporting with 5000 Viral Test Media, CM Sangma said. “We have enough VTMs in our stock to test all those coming from outside Northeast,” he added.

Meghalaya was declared corona-free on May 19. But, the state lost its status in a day after a 33-year-old woman tested positive for the coronavirus in Garo Hills.

The state has registered 14 confirmed cases and one death while 12 have been cured or discharged.

Meanwhile, the neighbouring state of Assam has registered a total of 214 cases and four deaths. Of the 214 cases, 153 are active and 54 have been cured or discharged.
