Shillong (Meghalaya), Aug 29, 2018:

In a move apparently aimed at curbing the spurt in single mothers and the resultant economic hardships they face, the Meghalaya government has now made it compulsory for married couples to furnish marriage certificates for all official work.

This was confirmed by Excise, Registration, Taxation and Stamps Department’s Undersecretary In a letter to Maitshaphrang convener Michael N Syiem.

The letter stated that it had been made compulsory for all departments to ensure that couples submit marriage certificates for official work.

Syiem had earlier petitioned Chief Minister Conrad Sangma to implement the Meghalaya Compulsory Registration of Marriage Act, 2012.

He had also pointed out to the Chief Minister how there had been a spurt of single mothers with husbands abandoning families without economic support were forcing them to penury and resulting in high school dropouts and juvenile delinquency.
