Meghalaya Man Uphas Uddin Stabbed and Killed in Home, Police Say 'Not Related to Communal Clash'

Shillong, March 1, 2020:

Meghalaya Police has said that the murder of a certain Uphas Uddin, who was reportedly stabbed and killed late at night on Saturday, is "probably not related" to the string of violent incidents that have been reported in the Northeast Indian State since Friday.

The Police informed that at 2.45 am, a telephonic information was received from Wanstep Youroin of Pyrkan Village that one person namely Uphas Uddin (37) was "stabbed and cut" by unknown persons. The injured person was moved to the Ichamati CHC but was declared dead on arrival. The Meghalaya Police has informed that inquest and other formalities have been conducted over the dead body, which will be shifted to the Shillong Civil Hospital for post-mortem.

During enquiry it has been ascertained that 3 persons entered who knew the exact house, entry door and bed the victim was sleeping, which indicates that this may be the result of business rivalry or personal enmity.

Talking to Inside Northeast, East Khasi Hills SP Claudia Lyngwa has said that the brutal murder is "probably not related" to the unrest that has been reported in certain parts of Meghalaya since a meeting organized by the Khasi Students' Union (KSU) over the Citizenship Amendment Act and implementation of Inner Line Permit (ILP) in the State. "The murder was meticulously planned out and executed, so it is unlikely that it is related to the unrest", Lyngwa said.

The violence can be traced to a Khasi Students’ Union meeting in Ichimati along the Assam-Bangladesh area and has a high number of non-tribal dwellers. The KSU has been agitating against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act and are demanding the extension of Inner Line Permit (ILP) regime to Meghalaya to “protect the interests” of the tribal population.
