The Government of Meghalaya has been successful in mobilizing the people of the state to plant 1.5 million (15 lakh) trees as part of its 'One Citizen One Tree' campaign on World Environment Day (June 5).
The success of the campaign was announced by Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma via micro-blogging site Twitter. He tweeted: "I extend my appreciation and congratulations to the people of the State for the record success of Meghalaya 'One Citizen One Tree' campaign. We achieved the feat to plant 1.5 million trees on 'World Environment Day'.
Sangma himself took part in the event and uploaded pictures of himself planting saplings at the St. Edmund's School in Shillong.
It may be mentioned that the Meghalaya CM Sangma had expressed keen interest to do his part to encourage the planting of trees in his state and had been reminding the people to take part in the Government’s latest campaign.
Earlier, the Meghalaya Chief Minister had tweeted: appeal to the citizens of Meghalaya to join the campaign and be part of our mission to plant 1.5 million trees this World Environment Day. Our journey to create a greener earth should continue beyond the celebration of World Environment Day.”
In another Tweet, Sangma shared the importance of planting trees. “Trees are vital for our existence. They give us oxygen, store carbon, stabilise the soil and give life to the world’s wildlife. Let us come together this World Environment Day and beyond to secure our future and make Meghalaya greener, cleaner and healthier”, he tweeted.
World Environment Day is the United Nations day for encouraging worldwide awareness and action to protect our environment. It has been celebrated all across the world since 1974.
