Meghalaya by-polls end peacefully

Shillong (Meghalaya), Aug 23, 2018:

Polling in the by-elections to the Ranikor and South Tura constituencies in Meghalaya ended peacefully on Thursday evening.

While 72.87% polling was registered in the South Tura by-poll, Ranikor constituency registered a high of 83.2% polling.

Polling was necessitated in South Tura following resignation of National People’s Party (NPP) MLA Agatha Sangma, who had relinquished her position to enable her brother and Chief Minister Conrad Sangma to get elected to the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly.

In Ranikor, polling became necessary as Martin M Danggo, who was elected on a Congress ticket in the Assembly election held in February this year, resigned to shift allegiance to the ruling NPP.
