Guwahati, December 11, 2018:
Christmas has come early for supporters of the Mizo National Front (MNF), who erupted in joy as their party took a decisive lead and captured 26 of the 40 assembly seats in the recently-concluded elections.Incumbent CM Lal Thanhwala’s Congress party could only secure 5 seats and withthe defeat in Mizoram, the Congress have lost their last bastion in the NorthEast.
The historical day was celebrated with pomp and
splendour by the public who thronged the streets in hundreds, if not thousands.
Sweets are being distributed and carols are being sung as the public celebrated
the victory of the MNF, fronted by the much-loved Zoramthanga, erstwhile CM of
Mizoram. BJP’s poor form in the assembly elections continued as they were
only able to capture a single seat.
Zoramthanga, after leading the MNP to a momentous
victory, asserted that he was confident of forming a successful government and
laid down the upcoming government’s three top priorities- liquor prohibition,
construction of roads in Mizoram and repair of existing ones and finally, the
ushering in of socio-economic development in Mizoram, especially through
economic reforms meant to uplift the poor.
