Chakma NGOs laud police for swift action in infant theft case in Mizoram’s Kamalanagar

KAMALANAGAR: The Central Young Chakma Association and Chakma Mahila Samiti have lauded the Mizoram Police for their swift action, valiant efforts, and efficiency in solving the baby theft case which occurred in Lunglei town of Mizoram on January 21,2021.

The Chakma NGOs in their joint statement on Monday said that the baby boy delivered on January 20, 2021 by Mrs  Surota Chakma, wife of Mr Dhilon Chakma of Tipperaghat village at  Lunglei Civil Hospital was stolen by an unidentified woman, dressed in the uniform of a hospital staff nurse on the pretext of shifting the baby to Sick Newborn Care Unit (SNCU). The woman convinced the couple by assuring to return the baby to her mother after one hour.

However, the couple got suspicious and realized that they had been duped when the woman and the baby were nowhere to be seen even after several hours had passed.

They immediately filed an FIR at Lunglei Police Station, following which police immediately swung into action. In a matter of 15 hours time, police investigation led to the arrest of the culprit and the baby was safely handed over to his parents.

"The Central YCA and Chakma Mahila Samiti sincerely laud and salute the Mizoram Police, particularly Lunglei police headed by District SP Stephen Lalrinawma for their valiant efforts, skills and efficiency which led to the arrest of the culprit and safe reunion of the stolen baby with its parents. The role of Mizoram Police in solving this rarest of the rare case is highly praiseworthy and laudable", the press statement said.

According to sources, the alleged accused Vanlalnghaki (41) w/o Lalnunpuia of Farm Veng, Lunglei has been booked u/s 363 IPC in connection with the case.
