In a major setback for Mizo National Front (MNF), party chief and chief minister Zoramthanga is trailing by a huge margin in his constituency Aizawl East - I. With ZPM all set to form government, the party has captured all key constituencies as early Christmas celebrations ring in.
Mizoram had its polls on November 7 and the counting of votes was initially planned to start on Sunday with the other four states. However, the Election Commission deferred the counting by a day due to the special significance of Sunday for the Christian-majority population in the state.

In Aizawl East-I, a crucial battle is set to unfold in the upcoming elections. Chief Minister Zoramthanga, leading the MNF, is up against Congress candidate Lalsanglura Ralte and ZPM's Vice President Lalthansanga. Zoramthanga, a key player in Mizoram politics, had garnered 42.9 per cent of the votes in the 2018 polls.
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) had candidates in 13 constituencies, while the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), participating in Mizoram's assembly elections for the first time, contested in four. Additionally, there were 17 independent candidates in the fray.
Over 80 per cent of Mizoram's 8.57 lakh registered voters participated in the recent state assembly elections. A total of 174 candidates, comprising 18 women, contested for the 40-seat assembly.
