Mizoram: Chakmas Demand Amit Shah's Intervention after 34 Students Leave School Citing "Threat" from Mizos

Aizawl, October 8, 2019:

34 Chakma students, including nine girls of a Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya (JNV) in Serchhip district in Mizoram, left their school citing "threat" after one of them was allegedly beaten up by a group of Mizo students. The Chakmas are a minority community in the State.

According to reports, the principal in-charge of JNV, Thenzawl, E Abraham Abednago confirmed the incident and mentioned that the students left the school on Thursday, despite assurance of security by the school and the district administration.

The All India Chakma Students' Union (AICSU) said that the students were under fear after Nolin Bikash Chakma, a class XI student was brutally assaulted by a group of Mizo students.

As per the principal’s statement (in-charge) a fight broke out after one of the students suspected that his money was stolen by the victim. The students demanded separate dormitory.

Meanwhile, the Chakma student body alleged that Nolin was called to a room by a group of Mizo students and was attacked with iron rod.

The students’ body added that many such attacks on Chakma students have been reported earlier.

Tejang Chakma, the vice president of the All India Chakma Students Union in a statement on Friday that 34 students including nine girls left "due to lack of security, intimidation and threats of torture from the Mizo students following brutal torture of Nolin Bikash Chakma."

The organisation has asked Union home minister Amit Shah, who recently visited Mizoram, to address the issue.
