Mizoram yet to detect COVID-19 new strains

AIZAWL: Mizoram has not reported any case of new COVID-19 variants till date, reports said.

According to Dr. Pachuau Lalmalsawma, state spokesperson for COVID-19, the state government has sent 326 samples of COVID-19 infected positive patients to the National Institute of Biomedical Genomics (NIBMG) in West Bengal for genome sequencing.

The samples were sent between December 2020 and April of this year, he added.

The results of 69 of the 326 samples have been received, and all of them tested negative for new COVID-19 variants.

Results of the remaining samples are awaited.

Mizoram has reported 5,220 COVID-19 cases so far, with 4,600 patients recovering from the disease.

The state currently has 608 active COVID-19 cases while the death toll reached 12.

The state capital Aizawl, as well as ten other district headquarters, have been placed under virtual lockdown in order to disrupt the chain of COVID-19 transmission which will end on April 26 at 4 am.

According to Pachuau, at least 1,004 COVID-19 cases were reported from January 1 to April 23 of this year, with 552 cases being locally transmitted and the remaining 452 patients having a travel history.
