Mizoram’s Lalrinnungi tops 10th board, daughter of a vegetable seller

Aizawl, May 3, 2019:

Lalrinnungi, a 16-year-old girl from Mizoram, the daughter of a vegetable-seller, topped Mizoram’s High School Leaving Certificate (HSLC) examination 2019. The results were declared by the Mizoram Board of School Education (MBSE) on Thursday.

The desire for education made Lalrinnungi do certain labour works to overcome her financial hurdles to ensure that no hindrance is felt to complete her studies. She scored 486 out of 500 and secured “letter” marks in Mathematics, Science, Social Science, English, and Mizo.

She also expressed that her aim was to become a civil servant. Now that she obtained scores, she wants to shift to medical education to help people who cannot afford expensive treatment. Born at Sihphir’s Neihbawi, about 15 km from Aizwal, she started her schooling at Young Learner’s School at Sihphir, later taken over by the Presbyterian Church and renamed Presbyterian English School. She joined St Joseph Higher Secondary School as a border after class VIII.

Larinnungi helps her parents Zothantluanga and Lalhlimpuii in the weekend who are daily-wage earners selling vegetables to run the family.

Meanwhile, the teachers' fraternity has expressed happiness over her achievement.
