Uproar in Mon town following civilian killings; Assam Rifles camp vandalized

MON: Residents of Nagaland's Mon town continue to be in uproar over the killing of innocent civilians by Indian army soldiers in the Indo-Myanmar border district.

After the incident came to light, thousands of people in the district headquarter today staged protests, while some took matters into their own hands -- vandalizing the local Assam Rifles outpost. It is unclear whether any soldiers were injured in the attack.

Footage from Mon shows plumes of smoke rising into the sky, even as tension continues to grip the state in the midst of the celebration of the yearly Hornbill festival. The local Konyak Union office was also vandalized.

Meanwhile, to counter the unrest, mobile data and bulk messaging services have been suspended in the district, informed a senior official. "Mobile Internet/ Data Service/Bulk SMS of all the Service Providers has been in the entire area of the Mon district with immediate effect till further orders," the official communique said.

The security forces were set for a counter-insurgency operation in the Mon district that borders Myanmar, sources said. Following a tip-off about a possible movement of insurgents, they had laid an ambush near Oting village on Saturday afternoon.

But they opened fire on a vehicle on the Tiru-Oting road, which was carrying villagers,

Union minister Amit Shah said a Special Investigation Team will probe the matter.
