Nagaland Not to be Affected by CAA, Assures Governor RN Ravi

Kohima, January 18, 2020:

Nagaland Governor RS Ravi said that the state has been completely exempted from the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) as it is now completely shielded with the Inner Line Permit (ILP).

While addressing the Nagaland Assembly, Ravi said what the leaders have been reiterating ever since CAA’s passage in the Rajya Sabha and added that there was serious apprehension that the act would impact the indigenous people of Nagaland.

He informed that the government had decided to extend the Inner Line to the entire district of Dimapur, considering the concerns of the Nagas relating to the CAA.

It may be mentioned here that the deadline, November 21, 1979, will decide whether one would require to apply for the ILP. While those settled in Nagaland before the said date would not require ILP, those who entered the hilly state after the deadline would have to apply for ILP.

Ravi, however, assured that his government would not let the ILP affect the non-indigenous people settled in Dimapur. Apart from the ILP, the governor also mentioned the Register of Indigenous Inhabitants of Nagaland (RIIN), which would safeguard the rights of the indigenous people of Nagaland.

The Governor recognized that subsequent to the announcement of RIIN exercise, several issues and concerns were raised in various quarters with regard to the Commission for studying, examining and advising on all issues related to RIlN.

It needs mention that although Nagaland as been exempted from the purview of CAA, protests continue to take place opposing the same to safeguard the unique identity of the Northeast region as a whole.
