Nagaland Observes 18-Hour 'Bandh' Against Citizenship Bill

Kohima, November 19, 2019:

North East Forum for Indigenous People (NEFIP) Nagaland unit has called for an 18-hours bandh in the state of Nagaland from 6 am on Tuesday to 12 pm, on Wednesday.

The bandh has been supported by all the Tribal Bodies, business establishment organisations, Naga Mothers Organisation, as well as many other civil societies across the state.

The bandh has been called under the aegis of the JCPI Joint Committee on Prevention of illegal immigrants (NEFIP) unit for Nagaland.

The North Eastern organisations are protesting against the contentious Citizenship Amendment Bill (CAB), soon after the announcement by the BJP-led NDA government that the bill will be tabled in the winter season of Parliament.

Constituents of the Northeast Students’ Organization (NESO) have also held protests in front of the Raj Bhawans, to make their displeasure with the Bill clear to the Central Government. It may be mentioned here that the new draft of the Citizenship Bill will be tabled in the ongoing winter session of the Parliament.

Protests against the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill have been held across the Northeast, with pressure groups demanding the Government to withdraw the controversial Citizenship (Amendment) Bill.

In Assam, the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) had partaken in the Northeast-wide protests against the allegedly ‘communal’ Citizenship (Amendment) Bill in Guwahati city.

The student body’s members, which includes students from many colleges and institutions, staged a protest in front of Guwahati’s Raj Bhawan.

They had submitted a memorandum to Assam Governor PB Acharya, so that he can take the concerns of the people to the power corridors in New Delhi.
