KOHIMA: The results of the by-polls in Nagaland are officially in. Independent candidate T Yangseo Sangtam has officially won the Pungro-Kiphire Assembly seat by-poll in the Kiphire district defeating his nearest independent rival SK Yimchunger by 1,416 votes.

Ruling Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP) candidate Medo Yhokha won the by-poll to southern Angami constituency in Kohima district.
The byelections to the two Assembly constituencies in Nagaland recorded 83.69 polling.
The polling was held amid strict adherence to Covid-19 safety measures and tight security across 99 polling stations in the two Assembly seats.
Election officials said the polling in the two seats – 14 Southern Angami-I in Kohima district and 60 Pungro-Kiphire in Kiphire district – ended peacefully at 4 pm in the afternoon.
Briefing the media in Kohima, chief electoral officer Abhijit Sinha said the polling percentage till 5 pm on D-Day was 83.69.
He said 60 Pungro-Kiphire seat recorded 89.8 percent polling while 70.4 percent electors cast their votes in 14 Southern Angami -I constituency.
Sinha said the polling process was by and large peaceful except in polling station 11 at Singrep village in Pungro-Kiphire where a law and order situation was reported.

He said the repoll will be conducted at the polling station which will be announced later.
He said all Covid-19 protocols were put in place and face masks and hand sanitizers were provided and thermal screenings done in all the polling stations.
The results of the by-polls in Manipur were also declared earlier. The ruling BJP party won 4 out of the 5 Seats in the State.
