Continuing the agitation against the amendment of the Citizenship Act, the citizens of Dimapur in Nagaland will once again raise their voices with the demand of the rolling back of the controversial legislation
The protest that has been named as 'Nagaland against CAA' will be held at in the Super Market area in the bustling Dimapur town of Nagaland and will be joined by people from all stratas of life, reports said.
Although Nagaland has been exempted from the CAA, as it falls under the Inner Line Permit (ILP) regime, locals have not shied away from expressing their distaste for the Bill-turned-Act, along with the rest of the Northeast India states.
The Congress party in Nagaland, still a prominent force despite the rise to prominence of the BJP-backed NDPP party, has been organizing protests in the region, in keeping with the party's resolution to oppose the BJP brought CAA-NRC-NPR.
On December 20, the Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC) staged a peaceful public rally to protest against the Citizenship Amendment Act, 2019 and National Register of Citizens (NRC) at Khermahal Police Point, Dimapur.
K Therie, former Chief Minister and current Congress chief, forewarned that the CAA which grants Indian citizenship to non-muslims of Afghanistan, Pakistan and Bangladesh if implemented will inundate the North East Region. He also pointed out that with the implementation of NRC in Assam; more than 19 lakhs Assamese people are already in detention camps.
Meanwhile, clamour for the repealing of the contentious legislation continues in the Northeast, and primarily in Assam. Although the ILP areas and the areas under the 6th Schedule have been exempted from the purview of the CAA, one question still persists in the minds of people: will the people living in protected areas who gain citizenship under the CAA be transferred to non-tribal regions?
