Nagaland ’s Covid-19 sample positivity rate one of highest in country

DIMAPUR: The Nagaland state health and family welfare department said the state’s Covid-19 sample positivity rate at 10 percent continued to remain one of the highest in the country. 

This has signified undetected cases in the community in the state, the department said in its weekly report on Saturday. 

Expressing serious concern over the positivity rate, the report said Dimapur with 13.4 percent and Kohima with 10.6 percent have the highest sample positivity rate in the state, indicating that many undetected cases roaming unaware in the society. It said the weekly positivity rate in the state stood at 15 percent. 

It said household contacts and workplaces (both high-risk settings) continue to be the commonest place of infection. The department expressed concern that the positivity among symptomatic/ pre-op screening/ travel purposes coming to flu clinics increased to 12 percent in the past two weeks. 

It urged the people to strictly follow all the Covid-19 safety protocols, especially during this festive season. It said it will be vital to control the pandemic in the state during the festive season.

The department pointed out that more social events and gatherings always follow later with cases from the community. It said the organisers of social events, sports events or any gatherings should take responsibility of the danger such activities pose to the society. 

“Transmission from such events will manifest only days to weeks later when the infection reaches the high-risk groups in the form of severe cases or deaths,” it stated. 

On Sunday, Nagaland recorded 33 positive cases out of which 27 were from Kohima and the other 6 cases from Dimapur.

It was further informed by the state Health minister S Pangnyu Phom that the 7 patients recovered from COVID-19 on December 13.
