1 Killed after Under-construction Bridge Collapses in West Bengal's Malda

Malda, February 17, 2020:

An under-construction building collapsed in Farakka in Malda district of West Bengal leaving one person dead and several others injured. One more person is reportedly in a very critical condition.

The accident happened around 8 pm on February 16 and the bridge reportedly broke when a girder of the second Farakka bridge gave away around 8 pm, reports said. More workers are believed to be trapped underneath the debris.

Personnel of the disaster management department, Malda, are conducting the rescue operation, an officer said.

According to reports, the portion of the under-construction bridge that fell has injured as many as 5 people and several people have been taken to Malda Medical College and Hospital for treatment. The cause of the collapse has not been ascertained.

Rescue operations were rushed with additional equipment on spot and the entire traffic in the surrounding area was disrupted due to the rescue efforts.
