MUMBAI: In a shocking incident, 10 newborn babies died after a major fire broke out at a hospital in Bhandara district of Maharashtra.

The incident took place at around 2 am on Saturday at the neonatal care unit of a district government hospital.

The babies lost their lives due to suffocation after the smoke engulfed the building. The infants were aged between a month and three months.

When the staff at work opened the door of the unit, they noticed a large quantity of smoke inside. The incident was immediately reported to the seniors. Soon, the fire brigade personnel rushed to the spot to douse the fire.

Top officials and cops from the district have rushed to the spot.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray spoke to Health Minister Rajesh Tope as well as District Collector and Superintendent of Police of Bhandara district. The CM has ordered a probe in the entire incident.

The government has announced an ex-gratia of Rs 5 lakhs each to the kin of the deceased in the fire incident.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah and Congress leader Rahul Gandhi expressed grief over the incident.
