CAA Row: Death Toll Reaches 16 in UP

Lucknow, December 22, 2019:

At least sixteen people have been killed in violence during the widespread protests against the contentious Citizenship Bill-turned Act in Uttar Pradesh (UP).

According to reports, violence broke out on Saturday during demonstrations in Rampur, Kanpur and many towns of UP. The clash between anti-CAA protesters and police has left a 25-year-old youth dead. Several people were also injured in the clash, said reports.

In Kanpur, protesters set ablaze the Yatimkhana police post and threw stones at the police forces, following which, more than 260 policemen were injured. 57 of them suffered gunshot wounds.

UP Police said that on Friday and Saturday, there was no firing from its side. Officials said that firing came from the protesters’ side. Officials informed that five two-wheelers and a car were set afire during the protests. In UP, the internet services also remained suspended in some of its major parts, including Lucknow.

While UP protests have taken a violent turn, protests in West Bengal, Assam, Meghalaya, Maharashtra and Delhi were peaceful. Students’ bodies, women and other civil and social organisations have continued opposing the Citizenship act across the country.
