Nibash Sarkar, a BJP Lok Sabha election mascot from West Bengal, committed suicide in his village of Hanskhali on Friday, October 4, over fears of being excluded from the NRC.
Sarkar's images where he was dressed up as Lord Hanuman, had become viral ahead of the Lok Sabha polls in the State.

It may be mentioned here that BJP national president Amit Shah, during a recent visit to Kolkata, had reiterated that NRC will be extended to the entire country and all illegal immigrants will be thrown out.
However, Shah had also stated that the 'minorities' from neighboring countries of Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan, would be given citizenship in India.

Meanwhile, West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress supremo Mamata Banerjee had earlier requested Shah not to begin an NRC in Bengal. "TMC MPs will try to stop us and not allow the passing of the Citizenship Bill in the Upper House. Last time, they did not allow us to pass the Bill, due to which our Hindu refugee brothers and sisters are yet to gain Indian citizenship", Shah had said, in response to the TMC's opposition to the imposition of an NRC in Bengal.

It may be mentioned that the final NRC list in Assam, which was published on August 31, left over 19 lakh people stateless. Their fates will now be decided at the Foreigners' Tribunals.
