NEW DELHI: Charanjit Singh Channi today took oath as the 16th Chief Minister of Punjab. Channi will be the first Dalit leader to head the state. Governor Banwarilal Purohit also administered the oath of office to Congress leaders Sukhjinder S Randhawa and OP Soni as ministers in the state cabinet.

The swearing-in ceremony was held at Raj Bhawan in Chandigarh and was attended by Congress President Rahul Gandhi, Punjab Congress chief Navjot Singh Sidhu and other leaders in attendance. However, former chief minister Captain Amarinder Singh skipped the event.

Earlier today, the newly-elected CM of Punjab offered prayers at a Gurudwara in Rupnagar before his oath-taking ceremony.

On Sunday, Channi was unanimously elected as the leader of Congress Legislature Party of Punjab follow Caption Amarinder Singh’s resignation.

Amarinder Singh resigned from the CM’s post on Saturday after months-long power-sharing tussle with Punjab Congress president Navjot Singh Sidhu. Punjab is one of the last three remaining Congress-ruled states in the country. While putting in his papers, Singh said he felt humiliated - a reference towards the doubts raised by the Congress’ central leadership over his capabilities to run Punjab.
