Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi has said that there is a larger conspiracy to destabilize the Judiciary which has remained independent and said there is some bigger force behind the woman with criminal track record making sexual harassment charges against the CJI.
A special bench of the Supreme Court today called an emergency hearing after a former staff at the top court, in an affidavit to several Supreme Court judges, alleged she was sexually harassed by Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi.
Meanwhile, the CJI has strongly denied these allegations and stated that the independence of the judiciary is “under threat”.
Gogoi also said that there was a conspiracy to deactivate the office of Chief Justice. “Things have gone too far. Judiciary cannot be made a scapegoat”, he said. Gogoi also added that the unnamed woman who had made the allegations against him has a criminal background and has two police cases against her.
Born in Assam in 1954, Justice Ranjan Gogoi became the first person from the Northeast to be appointed as the Chief Justice of India. He is the son of former Assam Chief Minister Kesab Chandra Gogoi.
