Coronavirus: India witnesses 1-day surge in COVID cases, crosses 4 Lakh mark

India’s tally of the coronavirus disease (Covid-19) crossed 4 Lakh mark after 86,432 new cases were recorded across the country in the highest single-day spike, according to the Union health ministry on Saturday.

The total number of cases now stands at 40,23,179, which is a few cases behind Brazil, the world's second-worst affected nation after the United States. The South American country, which has reported 40,91,801 so far, has been showing initial signs of easing in the spread of the virus, news agency Reuters reported.

The death toll in the country – third worst-hit after the United States – reached 69,561 after 1,089 patients succumbed to the viral disease between Friday and Saturday.

At present, India has 8,46,395 active cases, and as many as 31,07,223 people have recovered.

As of Saturday, there are 846,395 are active cases, 21.04% of which account for India’s total caseload.

The Union Health Ministry has recently informed that it didnot not issued any guidelines recommending wearing of a mask if someone is driving a car or cycling alone.However, if someone is exercising, cycling or jogging in a group, they should wear masks and maintain social distancing so as not to infect each other, Secretary in the Union Health Ministry Rajesh Bhushan said at a press briefing.
