Coronavirus Update: 987 Positive Cases Reported in India, Death Toll Rises to 25

New Delhi, March 29, 2020:

India has surpassed the 900-mark in the total coronavirus or COVID-19 cases on Saturday to reach 987 infected people in the country as on Sunday.

The coronavirus has spread across the length and breadth of the country. From the first case detected in Kerala in the month of January, it has expanded its footprint in the country, affecting 980 people. The death toll due to the infection has also increased to 25 on Sunday from 21 on Saturday.

Among the States and Union Territories in India, Maharashtra has recorded the highest number of positive coronavirus cases -- 193 (including three foreign nationals). Kerala has 176 positive cases (including eight foreign nationals), Karnataka has 76, Telangana has 65, Uttar Pradesh has 61, Gujarat 58, Rajasthan 56, Delhi -49, Tamil Nadu 42, Punjab and Madhya Pradesh 39 each, Jammu & Kashmir 33, Haryana 21, Andhra Pradesh 19, West Bengal 18, Ladakh 13, Bihar and Andaman & Nicobar Islands have 9 cases, Chandigarh 8, Chattisgarh and Goa have 6 each, Uttarakhand 5, Himachal Pradesh 4, Puducherry, Manipur and Mizoram have one cases each.

Internationally, 30,888 deaths have been reported till date due to the coronavirus, with a large chunk of those being reported from Italy (10,023). In all, 664,248 people have been infected by the virus till now, with 142,366 having recovered. Somewhat gravely, 25,207 are said to be in a “serious” condition.

It may be mentioned here that Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday opened an account in a bid to receive donations to fight the disease. Announcing the creation of the account through a tweet, Modi invited all and sundry to donate money so that the Government can continue its fight against the coronavirus.

A tweet sent out from the PM’s official account read “The PM-CARES Fund accepts micro-donations too. It will strengthen disaster management capacities and encourage research on protecting citizens. Let us leave no stone unturned to make India healthier and more prosperous for our future generations.” Modi has also stated that this Fund will also cater to similar distressing situations, if they occur in the times ahead.

Tata Trusts have also announced a donation of Rs 500 crores to fight the virus. It has pledged a sum of Rs 500 crores to aid in India’s fight. “The current situation in India and across the world is of grave concern and needs immediate action. The Tata Trusts and the Tata group companies have in the last risen to the needs of the nation. At this moment, the need of the hour is greater than any other time”, the group wrote in a statement that was undersigned by Chairman Ratan Tata himself.

Currently India is in lockdown after the PM had declared the same for 21 days. Police, Health, Disaster Management and many more have been tirelessly working to cater to the general public's needs during the lockdown phase.
