Guwahati, January 17, 2020:

In Karnataka cows were made to walk through fire as part of a ritual, which involves bullocks and their masters running through the flames. However, ‘Gau Rakshaks’, who are widely known for their actions against the ones “harming” cows, are silent on a tradition, which makes cows pass through massive flames.

The common belief behind the ritual called Kicchu Hayisuvudu is that doing so would bring good fortune to them and keep away the evil.

The Kicchu Hayisuvudu ritual is observed at the time of Makar Sankranti, Pongal, Bihu and Lohri celebrated in different parts of the country. According to locals, the cows are decorated with garlands and bells and made to walk through massive flames.

Gau Rakshaks and their promoters are often seen to speak on how cows are holy to Hindus and how they should be protected. But when it comes to this particular ritual, they are silent.

While the rest of the country was celebrating Makar Sankranti, Pongal, Lohri, Bihu in different parts of India, some in Karnataka made the cows to walk through massive flames.

It may be mentioned here that the entire ritual gets over in a few minutes. The next day, people set their cattle free and allow them to graze in the open.

While the Kicchu Hayisuvudu is being observed in Karnataka, a question arises on the Gau Rakshaks’ ‘duty’ to protect the cows.
