KOLKATA: During Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s rally at Brigade Parade Ground in Kolkata today, popular Bengali actor Mithun Chakraborty joined Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

The move comes just weeks before West Bengal's Assembly elections, which are set to begin on March 27.

There was speculation that Mithun Chakraborty would join the saffron party to help the party improve its image in the state.

Speaking at the rally, Chakraborty said that it was his dream that has come true today.

"I grew up in a small locality in North Kolkata called Jorabagan and dreamed of becoming something big, but I never imagined I would have the opportunity to share a stage with the country's most powerful politicians, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi,” said Chakraborty.

“I am a Bengali, and I believe that everyone who has grown up here has a right over this land,” Chakraborty said, subtly criticising the Trinamool Congress for calling the BJP "outsiders."

"I promise to stand up and fight for the rights of all West Bengal residents,” he added.

The veteran actor was handed over the party’s flag by Vijayvargiya and state BJP chief Dilip Ghosh.
