Delhi: 7 Killed in Anti-CAA & Pro-CAA Protests, Schools to Remain Closed

New Delhi, February 25, 2020:

Seven people, including a head constable, have been killed in one of the most violent protests carried out in Jaffrabad, Maujpur and Bhajanpura areas of northeast Delhi.

The protests in Delhi’s northeastern part that started on Sunday against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act or CAA and in favour of the same by two different parties have spread to the other parts of the national capital claiming seven lives. Several people have sustained severe injuries in the protest.

Section 144 have been imposed in most parts of north east Delhi following the violent protests that began with the CAA supporters and CAA protesters hurling stones at each other on Monday. Vehicles and shops were also set on fire.

The situation in the national capital has become so tense that the schools and colleges have been declared shut for the next 24 hours.

On Monday, head constable Rattan Lal (42) succumbed to head injuries after being hit by stones in Gokulpuri. He was posted in the area a day earlier to control the situation. Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Amit Sharma, ACP Anuj and another Head Constable Chatarapal also suffered injuries.

It needs mention here that protests had erupted following Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Kapil Mishra gave an ultimatum to Delhi Police to free the protest sites. Clashes have been on since Sunday, where at least 500 people, mainly women and children turned up outside the Jaffrabad Metro Station in northeast Delhi.
