A Jamnagar sessions court here on Thursday sentenced sacked Gujarat IPS officer Sanjiv Bhatt to life imprisonment in a 1990 custodial death case.
Pronouncing the verdict, Jamnagar District and Sessions Judge D.M. Vyas charged Bhatt and then police constable Pravinsinh Jhala with murder.
As Additional Superintendent in Jamnagar, Sanjiv had gone on the field to quell a communal riot. In this process, a 100 people had been detained to control the riot. One of those people died in the hospital and a case of custodial death was filed against Bhatt.
It may be mentioned that Bhatt is the IPS officer who had openly spoken out about the then-Gujarat CM Narendra Modi’s role in the 2002 Gujarat riots. For this, he was suspended, jailed, and hounded extensively leading to his dismissal.
Bhatt is also known for his role in filing an affidavit in the Supreme Court of India against the then Chief Minister of the Government of Gujarat, Narendra Modi, concerning Modi's alleged role in the 2002 Gujarat riots.
