Farmers Protest: Sikh Priest commits suicide at Singhu Border

NEW DELHI: A Sikh priest from a gurudwara in Haryana who had recently joined the protests against Centre's three farm laws at Delhi’s Kundli border committed suicide at the Singhu border protest site on December 16.

The priest identified as Baba Ram Singh of Singhra village left a note written in Punjabi in whichhe said that he is sacrificing his life to express his pain and anger against the government’s behavior towards the farmers.

According to reports, the 65-year-old priest shot him at around 5:30 pm and was rushed to Park hospital in Panipat and was immediately declared dead on arrival. His body is now on its way to Karnal where his funeral will take place on Friday.

Reportedly, Baba Ram Singh, as he is addressed by his followers, had met Gurnam Singh Charhuni, the chief of the Haryana unit of the Bharatiya Kisan Union, and expressed his concern over the deadlock between the government and the farmers.

After the incident, opposition leaders offered condolences to the deceased including Rahul Gandhi, Arvind Kejriwal and many more. However, the Haryana Government is yet to comment on the incident.

"The news of Sant Baba Ram Singh Ji's suicide is very painful. In this hour of grief, condolences to his family. Our farmers are asking for their rights. The government should listen to the voice of farmers and withdraw the three laws," Mr Kejriwal tweeted in Hindi.

Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh grieved over the death of Sant Ram Singh. He tweeted, “Extremely shocked and saddened on learning of the tragic news of Sant Ram Singh ji of Nanaksar Singhra wale from Karnal ending his life at Singhu Border in protest against the Centre’s Farm Laws. My prayers are with his family and supporters in this time of grief.”

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi tweeted in Hindi, "Sant Baba Ram Singh from Karnal died by suicide over the farmers' condition at Kundli border. My condolences in this moment of grief... many farmers have sacrificed their lives. The Modi government has crossed all the limits of cruelty. Stop being adamant, take back the anti-farmer laws.”

Delhi Sikh Gurudwara Management Committee President Manjinder Singh Sirsa expressed grief over the incident. He tweeted saying, "Sant Baba Ram Singh died by suicide seeing the plight of farmers. This protest has rattled the country to its core. I offer my prayers to Waheguru, for his soul rests in peace.”
