Former Finance Minister Arun Jaitley on Life Support

New Delhi, August 18, 2019

Former Finance Minister Arun Jaitley has been put on life support system at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi.

Several political leaders including Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and Union Minister Piyush Goyal visited the hospital on Saturday.

On August 9, the 66-year-old leader was admitted to the hospital. Information is yet to be issued on the political leader’s health condition. The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) has not released any bulletin since August 10.

Ministers have been paying their visits to Jaitley. Among them, Jammu and Kashmir Governor Satya Pal Malik, Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan, BJP’s  Satish Upadhyay, Congress Abhishek Singhvi and Jyotiraditya Scindia, and Air Force chief Air Marshal Birender Singh Dhanoa are the ones.

Visitors’ list also includes BSP chief and former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati

Arun Jaitley was admitted to the hospital after he complained of breathlessness and restlessness. Because of his ill-health, Arun Jaitley refrained from contesting the 2019 elections.

In May 2017, Jaitley had undergone a renal transplant with Railway Minister Piyush Goyal.

Jaitley served as the Finance Minister in the Modi government’s first term in office. However, due to his poor health, he was forced not to present the Interim Budget in February this year before the Lok Sabha polls.

One of the BJP party’s key members, Prime Minister Modi had given Mr Jaitley charge of three ministries after winning his first term in 2014 — finance, defence and information and broadcasting.

Mr Jaitley’s health issues worsened after he had the kidney transplant sine 2017. A diabetic, he also had to skip the interim budget in February when he was in hospital in the US for treatment.
