The Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) on Thursday filed a writ petition against the Citizenship Amendment Bill, 2019, in the Supreme Court. The contentious Bill was passed in the Rajya Sabha on Wednesday after the hours-long debate.
The writ petition has been filed by four petitioners, including Lok Sabha MPs Kunhalikutty PK, Navas Kani, ET Mohammed Basheer and Rajya Sabha MP Abdul Wahab of the IUML.

The IMUL shared a picture on social media handle and tweeted, "IUML Leaders meeting Senior Supreme Court Advocate and Veteran Congress Leader Shri. @KapilSibal in connection with party's move to challenge the Citizenship Amendment Bill in the Supreme Court. @PKKunhalikutty @BasheerEt @AbdulWahabPV @KNavaskani @KhorrumOmer @HarisBeeran"
Meanwhile, Congress, Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind, and other organizations have also hinted at approaching the Supreme Court, while claiming that the Bill is against the Constitution of India.
On the other hand, the passing of the bill has led to massive protests all across the Northeast, and especially in Assam. All the stakeholders of the society are highly disappointed over the BJP government’s adamant move. The students from every college moved out to the streets to join protests against the Bill. However, their efforts went in vain.
Following the situation of outrage in the state, indefinite curfew has been imposed in many districts of Assam. Also, mobile internet service has been suspended from 7 pm of Wednesday to 7 pm of Thursday.
