India’s COVID-19 tally crosses 5M including 90,123 newly recorded cases

India recorded 90,123 new cases of the COVID-19 disease on Wednesday, according to Union health ministry update. The total number of cases now stands at 5,02,0359.

The number of active cases has reached close to the million-mark; it’s currently at 9,95,933, according to the health ministry. Nearly four million patients (39,42,360 to be exact) have recovered and discharged from hospitals.

The country recorded 1,290 fatalities during the said period which took the death toll to 82,066, according to Health ministry update.

India now accounts for nearly one-sixth of all Covid-19 cases recorded worldwide since the outbreak originated in China nine months ago.

Unlike the US, India’s trajectory has shown no indication of a peak so far and has also been growing steadily. The seven-day average has increased by 50.7% in the last 30 days — it was 61,933 on August 17.

Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) DG Balram Bhargava Tuesday clarified that reinfection was possible even though it was a “very rare” occurrence. He also stressed that it was not a matter of serious concern. The remarks were made amid suspected cases of Covid-19 reinfection being reported from abroad and Indian states like Telangana, Karnataka, Gujarat, Punjab, and Maharashtra.

Arunachal Chief Minister Pema Khandu on Tuesday tested positive for coronavirus. Taking to Twitter, he said, “I am asymptomatic and feeling healthy. However, as per SOP and safety of others, I am self-isolating myself and request everyone who came in contact with me to adhere to the SOP.”
