ISRO Locates Lander Vikram on Moon’s Surface

New Delhi, September 8, 2019:

Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has announced that the agency has located Vikram, the Chandrayaan-2 lander, on the Moon's surface. The lander lost contact on the day of its landing near the southern pole of the Moon on Saturday.

ISRO is yet to establish contact with Vikram. However, it has been located with the help of the Chandrayaan-2 orbiter that is revolving around the Moon. The orbiter managed to shoot a thermal image of the Vikram lander.

Letting the world know about this recent development, ISRO chief K Sivan took to his social media handle and tweeted, “We've found the location of Vikram Lander on lunar surface&orbiter has clicked a thermal image of Lander. But there is no communication yet.

We are trying to have contact. It will be communicated soon. #Chandrayaan2”

On September 7, scientists of ISRO lost contact with the moon lander Vikram moments before it touched down on the moon’s surface. India was hoping to become the first country to make a soft landing on the south pole of the moon.

Chandrayaan 2 is India’s third mission to a celestial body, after Chandryaan 1 mission in 2008, and the Mars Orbiter Mission in 2013.
