New Delhi, October 18, 2019:

Justice Sharad Arvind Bobde is likely to be appointed as the new Chief Justice of India as CJI Ranjan Gogoi from Assam is retiring this November.

Reportedly, Justice Gogoi, in a letter to the government has recommended that the government start the process of appointing Justice Sharad Arvind Bobde as the next Chief Justice of India. After CJI Gogoi, Justice SA Bobde is number 2 in seniority.

Justice Bobde is a former Chief Justice of the Madhya Pradesh High Court. His retirement is due on April 23, 2021.

1956 born Justice Bobde is a resident of Nagpur, Maharashtra. He studied at Nagpur University and later joined the Bombay High Court in 2000 as the additional judge. In 2012, he was appointed as the Chief Justice of the Madhya Pradesh High Court.

Justice Bobde was elevated to the Supreme Court in April 2013.
