KOLKATA: The West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee sustained injuries in her left leg, shoulder, waist, and neck in the ‘mob attack’ yesterday at Birulia Bazar area in Nandigram.

She is admitted to the state-run SSKM Hospital in Kolkata.

District magistrate Vibhu Goel, superintendent of police Praween Prakash and other officers visited the spot where she was attacked and spoke to eye-witnesses as well as checked for any CCTVs installed in the area to find out the exact sequence of events.

According to CM Banerjee, she was pushed by four to five people in Nandigram hours after she filed nomination for the assembly elections yesterday evening.

A case has also been registered under sections 341 (punishment for wrongful restraint) and 323 (punishment for voluntarily causing hurt) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) by the police over the alleged attack on the chief minister after Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Shiekh Sufian lodged a complaint against it.

Investigation on the matter is underway.

On the other hand, the opposition BJP alleges that the TMC leader is trying to turn a "simple accident" into a "pre-planned conspiracy."

BJP national general secretary Kailash Vijayvargiya said that it's possible that she was accidentally pushed, but to say that she was intentionally pushed is not acceptable.

She is surrounded by security staff round the clock, he added.

“Those responsible for this heinous incident need to be brought to justice,” TMC MP Derek O'Brien said.
