Kalu, who was gifted to Yogi by a temple devotee, was brought to the Goraksh temple in December 2016, and Yogi Adityanath became Chief Minister three months later in March, 2017. Thus, Kalu is said to be very 'auspicious' for the UP Chief Minister.
Yogi earlier had a dog named Raja Babu who had died, causing immense grief to his master.
According to media reports, whenever Yogi Adityanath goes to Gorakhpur, Kalu goes "berserk" and jumps around with joy. Sources have informed the media that like his master, Kalu is a shhudh shakahari (or pure-vegetarian), and eats whatever is prepared at the temple.

Recently, the Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister was seen feeding chunks of 'shuddh shakahari' paneer to his pet canine, and the internet was flooded with the viral pictures of master and dog's love affair.
Dwarika Tiwari, the office-in-charge of the Goraksh temple, told reporters that Yogi Adityanath is particularly fond of Kalu.
According to reports, Kalu was gifted to Yogi in Delhi by a temple devotee. For some time, Kalu remained in Delhi and was then taken to Gorakhpur, where he currently resides.
