Nirbhaya Case: Delhi LG Recommends Rejecting Mercy Plea of Convict

New Delhi, December 4, 2019:

Delhi Lieutenant Governor Anil Baijal has recommended the rejection of mercy plea filed by one of the convicts in the 2012 Nirbhaya gang rape case.

Earlier, the Delhi government had recommended rejecting the mercy plea of one of the convicts, Vinay Sharma, of the brutal rape and murder of 23-year-old paramedic student in Delhi.

The Ministry of Home Affairs on Wednesday received the recommendation of the Delhi government rejecting the mercy petition.

It may be mentioned here that the petition is examined by the Home Ministry. It will be forwarded to President Ram Nath Kovind for consideration and final decision.

Nirbhaya was gang-raped on December 16, 2012 and brutally assaulted. She died on December 29, 2012 at Singapore’s Mount Elizabeth Hospital. The brutality of the rape had shocked the nation and tagged Delhi as the rape capital of India. It had led to massive protests across the country.
