Nirbhaya Rapists Likely to be Hanged Soon

New Delhi, December 9, 2019:

According to reports, the Buxar Jail in Bihar has been directed to keep 10 execution ropes ready by December 14, which had triggered speculations that these might be meant for the 2012 Nirbhaya case convicts. Buxar jail is known for its expertise in manufacturing execution ropes.

Reportedly, it takes about three days to prepare one rope and mainly involves manual labour, with a little use of motorized machinery.

It is to mention here that on December 4, Delhi Lieutenant Governor Anil Baijal has recommended the rejection of mercy plea filed by one of the convicts.

Nirbhaya was gang-raped on December 16, 2012, and brutally assaulted. She died on December 29, 2012, at Singapore’s Mount Elizabeth Hospital. The brutality of the rape had shocked the nation and tagged Delhi as the rape capital of India. It had led to massive protests across the country.

On 10 September 2013, the four accused were found guilty of rape and murder and three days later were sentenced to death by hanging. In the death reference case and hearing appeals on 13 March 2014, Delhi High Court upheld the guilty verdict and the death sentences.
