The income tax department has announced that an individual's Permanent Account Number (PAN) will become inoperative if it is not linked with Aadhar card by March 31, 2020.
The government has been extending the deadline for PAN-Aadhar linking for eight times previously.
According to a PTI report, the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has inserted a rule to stipulate the "manner of making permanent account number inoperative".

"Where a person, who has been allotted the permanent account number as on July 1, 2017, and is required to intimate his Aadhaar number under sub-section (2) of section 139AA, has failed to intimate the same on or before March 31, 2020, the permanent account number of such person shall become inoperative immediately after the said date for the purposes of furnishing, intimating or quoting under the Act," says the CBDT.
If one's PAN becomes inoperative, s/he will be liable for all the consequences under the IT Act for failing to furnish or intimate the same.
However, this in a situation where a person links the PAN and Aadhaar after March 31, the PAN will become operative from the date of intimation of Aadhaar number.
It may be mentioned here that Section 139 AA (2) of the Income Tax Act cites that every person with a PAN, from July 1, 2017 onwards, and is eligible to obtain Aadhaar must intimate his or her Aadhaar number to tax authorities.
