PM Modi to unveil Swami Vivekananda statue at JNU today

New Delhi: PM Narendra Modi will be unveiling a life-sized statue of Swami Vivekananda at the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) through video-conferencing on Thursday at 6:30 pm.

Expressing his happiness, Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) vice-chancellor M Jagadesh Kumar said, “Prime Minister Narendra Modi will unveil (through video-conference) the life-size statue of Swami Vivekananda installed in the university campus on November 12, at 6:30 pm. The unveiling of the statue will be preceded by a programme on Swami Vivekananda.”

“Swami Vivekananda is one of the most beloved intellectuals and spiritual leaders India has been fortunate to produce. He enthused the youth with his message of freedom, development, harmony, and peace in India. The statue of Swami Vivekananda has been installed in the university campus with the support of JNU alumni,” he added.

The Union Minister for Education will also be present at the event.

Narendra Modi on his twitter stated, “At 6:30 this evening, will unveil a statue of Swami Vivekananda at the JNU campus and share my thoughts on the occasion. The programme will be held via video conferencing. I look forward to the programme this evening.”

However, the statue was constantly a matter of controversy among the students of JNU since last two years.

According to reports An RTI application was also filed by the former JNUSU president N Sai Balaji, asking about the cost of the construction. He said, “Even at a time where there is an immense fund crunch, the university has decided to divert its funds to construct statues. It is yet to disburse a lot of fellowship money and must be making arrangements to bring students back to campus.”

Meanwhile, Left-wing students also have questioned the “source of funds” for the building of the same.
