Prez Kovind Appoints Justice Sharad Arvind Bobde As Next CJI

New Delhi, October 29, 2019:

President Ram Nath Kovind has signed a warrant for appointing Justice Sharad Arvind Bobde as the next Chief Justice of India (CJI) on Tuesday.

Justice SA Bobde will take the oath as the new Chief Justice of India on November 18, 2019, after the present CJI Ranjan Gogoi retires.

It is to be mentioned here that as per convention, the sitting CJI recommends the name of his successor. CJI Ranjan Gogoi from Assam is retiring this November.

Justice Gogoi, in a letter to the government, has recommended Justice Sharad Arvind Bobde as the next Chief Justice of India as he is number 2 in seniority after him.

Justice Bobde is a former Chief Justice of the Madhya Pradesh High Court. His retirement is due on April 23, 2021.

1956 born Justice Bobde is a resident of Nagpur, Maharashtra. He studied at Nagpur University and later joined the Bombay High Court in 2000 as the additional judge. In 2012, he was appointed as the Chief Justice of the Madhya Pradesh High Court.

Justice Bobde was elevated to the Supreme Court on April 2013.
