"Proud of His Accomplishments": PM Modi on Nobel Laureate Abhijit Banerjee

New Delhi, October 22, 2019:

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi had an "excellent" meeting with Indian-origin Nobel Laureate Abhijit Banerjee at his residence in New Delhi today. The Chief Minister also stated that he is "proud" of Banerjee.

Taking to Twitter, the Prime Minister wrote, "His passion towards human empowerment is clearly visible. We had a healthy and extensive interaction on various subjects. India is proud of his accomplishments. Wishing him the very best for his future endeavours."

Meanwhile, Banerjee told mediapersons that meeting the Prime Minister was a "unique experience" for him.

The meeting between Modi and Banerjee bears extra significance as the Nobel laureate has been outspoken in his distaste for the current administration's economic policies. Banerjee's statements against the prevailing economic scenario in the country has drawn the ire of PM Modi's fans who came down harshly on the bespectacled intellectual on social media.

58-year-old Abhijit Vinayak Banerjee is an American economist of Indian origin, who is the Ford Foundation International Professor of Economics at Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

This year, he along with his wife Esther Duflo, won the Nobel Prize for Economics "for their experimental approach to alleviating global poverty". They are the sixth married couple to jointly win a Nobel Prize.
