Guwahati, August 15, 2019:

Addressing the nation on Independence Day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi introduced a new defence post – Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), the head of Army, Navy and Air forces.

He said, “India will have a Chief of Defence Staff. This is going to make the forces even more effective.” Hinting on the railways development, he also announced an investment of Rs 100 lakh crore on the country’s infrastructure. He also cited the revocation of Article 370 in Jammu and Kashmir and the new law on triple talaq to highlight the key decisions taken to ‘fulfill the aspirations of the people’.

A new initiative, Jal Jeevan Mission was also announced to make safe water accessible to all. He said “The centre will work with the state governments to mobilize drinking water in all parts of the country and communities.” An investment of Rs 3.5 lakh crore was announced for the Jal Jeevan Mission.

"The movement towards water conservation has to take place at the grassroots level. It cannot become a mere government programme. People from all walks of life have to be integrated in this movement," said PM Modi.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also spoke on issues like triple talaq, Article 370, Article 35A among others. Speaking on the economic front, he shared his vision that India can become a $5 trillion economy. “To some, the target of nearly doubling the size of Indian economy to $5 trillion in five years may seem difficult. But when we have in five years (of BJP rule) added $1 trillion as compared to $2 trillion size achieved in 70 years of independence, then this target is achievable,” he said.
