Guwahati, January 9, 2019:

Following the decision of the NDA government at the centre to pass the Citizenship Amendment Bill in the Rajya Sabha, a number of people from Northeast and especially Assam showed their strong stand against the Citizenship Bill in the national capital today.

More than two hundred students belonging to the All Assamese Students Association (AASA), New Delhi from Delhi University, Jamia Milia Islamia as well as Jawaharlal Nehru University gathered outside the historical monument Jantar Mantar to peacefully protest against implementing the contentious Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016, in the Parliament. The Bill was passed in the Lok Sabha yesterday and has been moved to the Rajya Sabha where proceedings have come to a standstill due to staunch opposition.

A student demonstrator, Arpita Dutta, had the following words to say: “We might be studying in Delhi, but we have no peace of mind because Assam is in dire straits. We have come out hand-in-hand in solidarity with the people of Assam who have taken to the streets to protest the Bill. It is our responsibility to protect the language and culture of Assam. We are here to raise our voices.”

It has been observed that students from other regions of India such as Bihar and Orissa have also joined the protest in support of their Assamese brethren.

Student bodies in Assam have also begun their revolt against the implementation of the Bill, with the Cotton University Students’ Union (CUSU) starting their boycott of classes from today onwards. The student body has also designs to start a anti-Bill student movement across the state.
