Guwahati, May 13, 2019:

We might soon be ruled by crooks as it has been revealed that more and more politicians with criminal records are contesting the elections at the highest levels.

A report by election watchdog Association for Democratic Reforms confirms that a higher percentage of 'crook' politicians participated in the Lok Sabha polls in 2019 compared to the last elections contested five years back in 2014.

The ADR report states that out of the 7,928 candidates analysed in Lok Sabha 2019, 1,500 (19%) candidates have declared criminal cases against themselves. This is exponentially more compared to 2014 as out of 8,205 candidates analysed during Lok Sabha elections in 2014, 1,404 (17%) candidates had declared criminal cases against themselves. Out of 7,810 candidates analysed during Lok Sabha elections in 2009, 1,158 (15%) candidates had declared criminal cases against themselves.

Out of 8,205 candidates analysed during Lok Sabha elections in 2014, 908 (11%) candidates had declared serious criminal cases against themselves. Out of 7,810 candidates analysed during Lok Sabha elections in 2009, 608(8%) candidates had declared serious criminal cases against themselves.

This proves that contesting the elections is becoming a hobby among criminals and they seem to have found that as long as the blessings of a political party is upon them, they are practically bulletproof.

The BJP candidate from Bhopal Pragya Singh Thakur, for instance, is notorious for her alleged involvement in the 2006 Malegaon blasts.

1070 (13%) candidates contesting in Lok Sabha 2019 Elections have declared serious criminal cases including cases related to rape, murder, attempt to murder, kidnapping, crimes against women etc.

Candidates with declared convicted cases: 56 candidates have declared convicted cases against themselves; 55 candidates have cases related to murder, 184 candidates have cases related to Attempt to Murder, while 126 candidates have declared cases related to crimes against women. Out of 126. It may be mentioned that 9 candidates have declared cases related to the heinous crime of rape (IPC Section-376).

This is indeed alarming as if these trends continue, we will soon be ruled exclusively by criminals.
