East Sikkim tops NE Sustainable Goal Index; no district from Assam in top 10

East Sikkim district topped the list of the first edition of North Eastern Region (NER) District SDG (sustainable development goals) Index Report and Dashboard 2021-22, followed by districts from Tripura.

NEW DELHI: East Sikkim topped the list of the first edition of North Eastern Region (NER) District SDG (sustainable development goals) Index Report and Dashboard 2021-22, followed by districts from Tripura.

The edition was released by NITI Ayog and DoNER Ministry on Thursday.

The top 5 districts of the SDG NER Index are East Sikkim  (score of 75.87) in Sikkim, Gomati,

North Tripura, West Tripura at Tripura and Serchhip in Mizoram.

Kiphire in Nagaland emerged as the worst performing state.

The score range in each State is as follows: Sikkim: between 71.87 and 75.87, Tripura: between 71.93 and 75.73, Mizoram: between 63.40 and 74.87, Manipur: between 64.93 and 72.13, Assam: between 62.67 and 71.73, Arunachal Pradesh: between 55.60 and 68.87, Meghalaya: between 56.87 and 66.27 and Nagaland: between 53.00 and 64.07.

No districts from Assam made it to the top 10 list.

Speaking on the occasion, Reddy said Kishan Reddy the Union minister for Culture, Tourism and Development of North-eastern region (DoNER) said “Preparation of District SDG Index and Dashboard is a fine example of PM’s Cooperative and Competitive Federalism mantra coming together”.

He stated that all the eight States, NITI Aayog, and the DoNER Ministry have come together to work on a common agenda.

The Minister also observed that as the availability of data allows for data-based decision making, that can foster a competitive spirit between districts and make them work towards improving their performance.

“I believe that this index should be used by NE States and my Ministry as a policy tool for intervention across sectors. This will help us improve the score of each district in the individual goal so that the composite score improves", said the Minister.

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) track the progress across 16 parameters that include parameters such as no poverty, zero hunger, good health, quality education, gender equality, clean water and sanitation, affordable and clean energy, decent work and economic growth, industry, innovation and infrastructure, reduce inequalities.
